One of the busiest stations, on London’s busiest Tube line, the Northern line, has undergone an extensive makeover. The station at West Finchley benefits from new customer information systems, and the new public address systems installed in the ticket halls and on the platforms now offer much greater clarity, meaning an end to ‘Darlek’ announcements.

As with all station modernisations, the emphasis has been on enhancing safety and security, with the number of CCTV cameras increased from six to 24 and seven new help points being installed throughout the station. In addition, redecoration works in the ticket hall, entrance and platforms has lifted the feel of the station.

The majority of the work took place in the few hours during the night when the station was closed to the public. Every night a team of dedicated engineers worked between 1am and 5am to improve the travelling experience of commuters. To maximise efficiency and minimise chances of night time disturbance to local residents, extra work took place during five weekend closures. This meant that the upgrade programme was completed more than a year ahead of schedule.

John Auguste, Tube Lines Project Manger for the upgrade of West Finchley station said:

“Incomprehensible announcements along with run down interiors are now a thing of the past for those usingWest Finchleystation. We recognise that commuters want information quickly and clearly. We also know they want an environment that is clean, safe and efficient and this is what passengers now benefit from at this station. This station upgrade is just part of a massive programme of upgrades going on across the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines.”
