Tube Lines was last week (16 October 2008) presented with the Waste
Management Initiative in the Commercial and Public Sector award by Daisy
McAndrew, economics editor for ITV News. It is a welcome recognition for
the company’s commitment to reduce material consumption and disposal of wastes
to landfill. This award comes in the same year that a Tube Lines
employee, Charlotte Simmonds, was named Environment Manager of the Year. Tube Lines has made a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 5,000
tonnes of CO2 by the end of 2008 and has implemented various recycling
initiatives to help hit that target. It is these initiatives – general
paper recycling, construction waste recycling and office recycling – that have
been recognised by the Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management Awards. The company has invested in a paper recycling vehicle to collect paper waste
from its 255 trains, 100 stations, six depots and three offices for recycling.
Last year a total of 1,714 tonnes of paper was recycled and the money saved
from landfill costs was ploughed into the company’s Community Support Fund
which supplemented employee charity donations to the tune of £22,700. Another initiative to be recognised was its improved office recycling
facilities. In May 2008, Tube Lines removed all personal desk bins and
replaced them with centrally located bins for wet, dry and paper waste.
In doing so, the company increased its office recycling rate by 73%. Philip Constable, Head of Distribution Services at Tube Lines said: “Good environmental practice makes good business sense and I am really
pleased that Tube Lines’ efforts to drive through sustainable waste management
initiatives have been recognised in this way.”
