Tube Lines makes the most out of weekend closure at Edgware station

Tube Lines has begun the installation of two passenger lifts at Edgware station. During this weekend’s station closure a team of engineers erected two six-tonne steel frames. Materials were hoisted 6m over the station and surrounding shops by a crane and lowered into specially designed wells.

Edgware Tube station is located in a busy suburb, between Edgware bus garage and train depot, with very limited access points to transport the materials into the station. The only methods available to the team were to use trains to deliver materials or the use of a crane to lift the materials over the station into the wells. Using a crane allowed for materials to be directly positioned in the wells reducing the cost, amount of manual handling required and the time taken to erect the frames.

The work took place this weekend as part of a series of planned weekend closures at the station. Tube Lines is now making more use of weekend closures to maximise the efficiencies of improvement projects and deliver the benefits of cleaner, safer and more reliable stations to passengers in record times.

Once installation is completed, the new passenger lifts at Edgware station will particularly benefit those with mobility difficulties, heavy luggage and young children, making the journey to and from station platforms easier. Edgware station is one of five stations that Tube Lines is currently working on to install passenger lifts.

Visu Mathan, Tube Lines’ Project Manager for Edgware station said:

“Installing lifts at stations is always going to be difficult, but being able to lift the materials into position from outside the station saves us a lot of time, money and man power. The weekend closure allowed us to carry out potentially noisy works during the day, reducing the disruption to local residents. We will continue working around the clock to ensure that the works at the station are delivered to commuters as soon as possible.”
