Safety and security set to be improved for Tube commuters

Tube Lines has begun the refurbishment of Edgware and West Finchley stations

Tube Lines has begun the refurbishment of Edgware and West Finchley stations on the busiest line in the UK – the Northern line. The work is set to improve the travelling experience of thousands of commuters who use the stations to travel into the capital.

The majority of the work will take place in the few hours during the night when the stations are closed to the public. Every night a team of dedicated engineers will work between 1am and 5am to improve the travelling experience of commuters. Works are expected to be completed in early 2009, over a year ahead of the contractual deadline.

To maximise the efficiency of the projects, extra work will take place during planned weekend closures. These works will minimise the disruption at night to nearby residents, and also mean that progress will be accelerated, bringing the benefits sooner to passengers.

Tube Lines aims to improve passengers’ journeys through the stations by improving the information available and enhancing the environment. New public address systems and customer information systems will be installed in the ticket halls and on the platforms to boost travel information. All entrances and the ticket halls will have new flooring and wall finishes, improving the interior design of the stations. As with all station modernisations, the emphasis is on safety and security, with an increase in the number of CCTV cameras and installation of new help points throughout the stations. In addition, new lighting in ticket halls, entrances and platforms will lift the feel of the station. In addition to the refurbishment works, Tube Lines is also set to install passenger lifts at Edgware station, improving access from station to platform levels.

Tooraj Shadnia, Senior Project Manger for the Tube Lines station upgrade programme said:

“The refurbishments will bring significant benefits to commuters who travel through the stations every day. My project teams are looking forward to delivering the improvements and seeing what we know will be impressive end results. We are adopting the best practices in construction to minimise disruption both to passengers and to the stations’ neighbours and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
