Safety award for Queensbury Tube workers

Engineers at Queensbury who are refurbishing the Underground station have been recognised for their safe methods of working. The team received beacon status for its work site, a Tube Lines award given only when the safest approach is taken and the one most considerate to the environment and to people living nearby. Barry Gardiner MP visited the station while work was in full swing at the weekend to present the teams with its award.

The upgrade of Queensbury station started in March and will boost the travel information available to passengers, improve security and make the station look and feel brighter and cleaner. Although Tube Lines normally conducts most of its work at night during the few hours that trains do not run, at Queensbury as much as possible is being done during the daytime in a series of weekend closures. This protects against the station’s neighbours being kept awake at night and will enable the team to work more efficiently, delivering the improvements sooner.

Any Tube Lines site can seek beacon status by demonstrating excellence in safety, good management and consideration for the environment and all those impacted by the work, including local communities and those working on or visiting the site.

Sites gaining this recognition subsequently receive visits from other project and maintenance teams at Tube Lines to enable them to learn from the high standards of safety being adopted.

Trevor Bellis, Head of Health, Safety and Environment Delivery for Tube Lines, said:

“This site at Queensbury has excellent levels of safety and environmental consideration. These are priorities for Tube Lines and it’s great to see an exemplary team working in the best possible way.”

Barry Gardiner, MP for Brent North, said:

“I was delighted to give the Tube Lines team at Queensbury the Beacon Award. What they are doing will bring real improvements to the service. But just as important they are focused on being considerate neighbours to local residents whilst the work is going on. People really appreciate that.”
