Tube Lines employee gets in a spin for charity

The Tube Lines Community Support Fund has donated £300 to the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice, following a marathon spinning session. The hospice, based in Hampton, Middlesex, provides essential care and support for children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families, free of charge, 365 days a year.

John Verrall, Group Stations Manager for Tube Lines – the company upgrading three of the busiest Underground lines – took part in a three hour spinning marathon along with 99 other riders hoping to raise over £25,000 for charity. John successfully applied to the company’s Community Support Fund to help boost his fundraising efforts and help support the Shooting Star Hospice.

The aim of Tube Lines’ Community Support Fund is to support its employees who help out with good causes through fundraising, volunteering or personal donations. The fund channels money raised through recycling the newspapers left on the Tube to various charities and community groups its own employees support. Since the fund started in early 2007, Tube Lines has donated over £25,000.

John Verrall said:

“I really enjoy getting involved with charity cycling events, and as a parent I was delighted to be raising money for such a good cause. I’ve been told that we might set a Guinness world record for the most people spinning together in sequence, for the longest time – if it’s successful it’ll be an added bonus.

“It’s great that Tube Lines has a scheme in place which supports the fundraising efforts of its employees. Donations like these can help the charity continue its admirable work helping and providing support for those with life-limiting conditions.”

Louise Brooker-Carey, Director of Communications at Tube Lines, who chairs the Community Support Fund, said:

“The Community Support Fund is part of Tube Lines’ commitment to giving back to the community. We are delighted to be able to support our employees like John who give their free time to support such good causes and will continue to do so in the future.”
