Tube Lines supports London School of Carnatic Music

Tube Lines Community Support Fund has donated £300 to the London School of Carnatic Music (LSCM). The school provides opportunities for the local community to learn Tamil language, dance, drama and music, and the donation from Tube Lines will help purchase traditional Tamil instruments for the school.

Arumugham Raveendran, planning engineer for Tube Lines – the company upgrading three of the busiest Underground lines – volunteers his services at the school. He has assisted in setting up the administrative structure of the school, as well as organising concerts to raise much needed funds to purchase musical equipment for the school. The school is the only provider of such tuition in the south east London region providing a programme of life long learning with many former pupils returning as teachers in later life.

The aim of Tube Lines’ Community Support Fund is to support its employees who help out with good causes through fundraising, volunteering or personal donations. The fund channels money raised through recycling the newspapers left on the Tube to various charities its own employees support. Since the fund started in early 2007, Tube Lines has donated over £25,000.

Arumugham Raveendran said:

I am delighted that Tube Lines is able to support such good causes. The school provides a thriving community space that connects individuals and local groups with highly respected teachers and artists from the UK and overseas. The LSCM is struggling to support the community but the donation from Tube Lines can help us continue bringing groups from the community together and inspire confidence in their  abilities to learn and perform.”

Louise Brooker-Carey, Director of Communications at Tube Lines, who chairs the Community Support Fund, said:

The Community Support Fund is part of Tube Lines’ commitment to giving back to the community. We are delighted in being able to support our employees such as Arumugham who give up their free time to help their local community and will continue to do so in the future.”

The donation to the LSCM is the latest support Tube Lines has provided in South East London. Tube Lines is also the sponsor of the New London Orchestra, another initiative which brings the local community together through music. The scheme is based in Newham where the Tube Lines £10m Skills Training Centre is located, providing specialised training for all Tube Lines employees.
