Building on our successes

Terry Morgan Due to a change in our financial year, our third annual environment report covers nine months, from April to December 2006. We made great progress during this period.

In 2006 we set four challenging environmental business objectives. We exceeded three, relating to environmental incidents, noise complaints and head office paper use and made significant progress on the fourth, concerning head office energy consumption. I am proud to say that achieving these objectives allowed us to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions for the year by 126 tonnes.

Employees came up with a wealth of innovative, creative and practical solutions that helped us to work smarter as well as reducing our environmental impact.

We are proud of our green roof, which is bedding in well at the Northern line control centre – and look forward to the next one, due to be installed at our Stratford train crew accommodation building in 2007. Reduced noise levels following our track replacement works show that we are making a difference, and teams involved in our newspaper recycling scheme have risen to the challenge of London’s new free afternoon newspapers with excellent results. We are determined to build on this success.

2006 was also a year for preparing for the future. We are all becoming increasingly aware of the threats of climate change, both for our business, and for London more widely. That is why I have a personal objective for 2007 to reduce Tube Lines’ carbon footprint.

"Following the Stern Report it is vital that all businesses focus on combating climate change. That's why Tube Lines is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. We need true behaviour change. No matter what the political landscape looks like in the future, it is up to us to initiate the change.

“We were delighted to be given the opportunity to develop a concept for a sustainable station for LU to consider.

“We have also said that companies tendering for the new Piccadilly line rolling stock contract must include their vision for energy efficiencies and environmental innovation including regenerative braking.

“These are just two of the many ways we're working to reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment. I am proud of the efforts made to date and am confident that Tube Lines people can continue to rise to meet this challenge."

David Begg,
Tube Lines Chairman
