About Go Green

balloonsGo Green defines the way we manage our impact on the environment. It consists of a range of procedures and supporting documents designed to define the mandatory requirements for good practice and to comply with legislation.

It was a contractual requirement for Tube Lines to have an externally certified environment management system by the end of 2005, but it also makes good business sense for us.

“Following certification of Go Green to ISO 14001 in 2005, we have been focusing on moving on from compliance to improving our performance,” says Environment Manager Charlotte Simmonds. “Environmental management is about being efficient and these efficiencies often have positive results including risk avoidance, improved morale and profit. A great example of this is our paper recycling scheme where the funds raised are now channelled out into the community via our Community Support Fund.”

Right from the start, Go Green has been driven by employee engagement and involvement in activities ranging from identifying our impacts to developing processes and training.

At its heart are five significant environmental impacts that were identified through workshops with employees and contractors in 2004. These are: noise and nuisance; waste and resources; pollution; wildlife; and energy and utilities. These are reviewed annually as part of our environment management review.

These served as the starting point for the development of procedures, guidance, training and environmental improvement plans.
