About Go Green

Go Green, Tube Lines’ environmental management system, defines the way we manage our impact on the environment. It consists of a range of procedures and supporting documents designed to define the mandatory requirements for good practice and to comply with legislation.

Tube Lines Environment and Community Report 2007It was a contractual requirement for Tube Lines to have an externally certified environment management system by the end of 2005, but it also makes good business sense for us.

"Go Green was developed for the business with the business,” explains Charlotte Simmonds, Environment Manager. It aims to speak to the business in plain English. At its heart are five significant environmental impacts that were identified through workshops with employees and contractors in 2004. These are: noise and nuisance; waste and materials; pollution; wildlife; and energy and utilities. These are reviewed annually as part of our environment management review.

Procedures, guidance, training and environmental improvement plans were then set up around these impacts. “We continue to monitor the effectiveness of Go Green and ensure it keeps up to date and relevant to the business,” Charlotte adds. 'Following certification of Go Green to ISO 14001 in 2005, we have been focusing on moving on from compliance to improving our performance as well as tackling strategic items including carbon management and climate change adaptation.”

Who is responsible?

The Environment team is part of Tube Lines’ Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) directorate, reporting to Chief Executive Terry Morgan. The team has over 25 years experience of environmental management in construction/engineering between them.
