About this report
We take our responsibilities to our employees, neighbours and surroundings very seriously, whether we are upgrading our lines, carrying out essential maintenance, or functioning as a major engineering and infrastructure employer in London.
As is fitting for a company supporting a public transport network, maintaining and protecting the environment is a priority. We have established robust systems to ensure we understand and minimise the impact our activities may have.
We set annual environmental objectives and targets; measuring and reporting on progress against these is important to us.
In this, our fourth annual environment and community report, we describe our approach to the environment, our policies, objectives, main activities, challenges and successes in 2007.
Our objective is to report on the relevant sections of the Global Reporting Initiative/Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs guidelines, as far as they are applicable to our business. We are reporting against required environmental performance indicators and continue to monitor additional indicators such as paper use and depot energy consumption that help the company recognise and improve its environmental performance. We seek independent assurance for a selection of our environmental key performance indicators to ensure you, the reader, can trust our facts and figures.
As with last year, we have also included details of the steps we are taking to respond to and prevent noise complaints, as well as outlining our expanding programme to put something back into the communities we serve.
We hope you enjoy reading this report and we welcome your feedback.
