About Tube Lines

Tube Lines is responsible for maintaining and upgrading the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. Our three lines are among the busiest on the Underground network and are some of the most heavily used transport arteries in the UK.

We are responsible for 320 kilometres of track, 255 trains, 100 stations, 2,395 bridges and structures, 227 escalators and 82 lifts. We have 3,500 employees and several thousand contractors working for us.

Most of our work is carried out at the night, between 12.30am and 5am, when the Underground is closed. As such, most of what we do is unseen by the general public.

Between transfer in January 2003 and December 2007, we have begun to transform the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines, upgrading them at a scale and pace never seen before on the Tube.

The key achievements of our first five years were that we:

– Completed all key upgrades on time and to budget, something unprecedented on the Underground

– Added an extra carriage to all Jubilee line trains

– Completed the upgrade of 47 stations, with another two close to completion early and a further 10 underway

– Refurbished 54 escalators

– Replaced or refurbished almost 93km of track

– Delivered reliability improvements on all three lines:

  • Cut delays by almost 50 per cent overall
  • Made progress towards installing new signalling systems on all three lines, which will reduce journey times and increase capacity

– Delivered flagship projects to support key enhancements to London’s infrastructure, such as the expansion of Wembley Park station to support the new stadium, and signalling to support the Piccadilly line extension to Heathrow Terminal 5.

– Improved the travelling environment for passengers in both stations and on trains

– Invested in training and development for our employees, including opening a £10m training centre

– Overhauled many of our ways of working to increase our efficiency
