At the centre of Tube Lines’ business is an uncompromising approach to health, safety and the environment in all that we do. Our policy is to comply with the spirit as well as the letter of current health and safety legislation, railway legislation, approved codes of practice and authoritative guidance literature. It recognises that the effective management of health and safety is an essential and integral part of its business management and is treated in equal priority to other business requirements. The Board understands and supports London Underground’s health and safety policy, is committed to continuous improvement of health and safety and actively strives to secure the co-operation and involvement of employees at all levels.
The Tube Lines Board fulfils the company’s responsibility for health and safety by: Ensuring that hazards are identified, risk assessed and preventative action taken wherever possible Ensuring that plant and systems are designed, constructed, maintained, operated and monitored to high standards of health and safety Maintaining management systems that ensure working conditions are safe and that assets accepted into service are fit for purpose Allocating adequate financial and human resources Providing training to staff and, where appropriate, suppliers Preparing annual safety action plans Setting targets for performance improvement, monitoring compliance, rewarding excellence and taking corrective actions where necessary Monitoring, auditing and reviewing the effectiveness of the health and safety management regime, undertaking improvements where necessary Providing communication arrangements and involving health and safety representatives in the promotion and maintenance of health and safety Clearly communicating our commitment, targets and requirements to staff, suppliers and customers Co-operating with other companies to maintain and improve system safety.

While the Board is accountable for health and safety matters and is totally committed to this policy, managers and other staff also have roles to play. Managers are responsible for health and safety performance in their areas of the business. Success can only be achieved with everybody’s wholehearted commitment and effort. Employees can contribute by raising safety issues with their managers, by helping to resolve them and by personal efforts towards safety in all their activities. Employees and suppliers are reminded of their duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who are affected by their activities.
