In the morning rush hour it can be a challenge to spot a passenger without a newspaper and many papers get left behind. We collect those papers which are left on trains and in stations for recycling. The amount we recycle increases every year – for example, we saw an increase of 88% in the amount of paper recycled between 2005-6 and 2006-7. In addition to the environmental benefits, we raise about £50,000 per year for the Community Support Fund, which supports employees’ charitable activities, from our recycling programmes.
In 2006, we also stepped up our office recycling, supplementing existing paper recycling facilities, introducing plastic recycling and continuing to recycle all toner cartridges. Recycling is being further stepped up throughout 2007.
