Carbon footprint

Carbon

Tube Lines calculated its overall Carbon footprint in 2006 and has reduced its environmental impact by over 5,250 tonnes of CO2 to the end of 2008.

A further challenging reduction of 1,000 tonnes CO2 is targeted to the end of 2009. Tube Lines has -

  • reduced the amount of energy and utility consumption in its buildings
  • improved how we use materials
  • reduced the amount of waste that we produce
  • reduced the number of transport miles we travel

Climate change

Tube Lines is quantifying the effect that a changing climate will have in the decades to come on its railway assets. Over 200 threats and opportunities have been identified.

We have identified how climate change in London will affect Tube Lines' work, including;

  • Extreme heat and cold
  • Reduced summer rainfall and wetter, milder winters
  • More intense rainfall events
  • Changes to season length

We are already adapting to a changing climate and have installed of one of the largest green roofs on a railway building and are benefiting from an innovative rainwater harvesting system.

The rainwater feeds into an automatic train washing machine and has reduced demand for mains water by up to 80%.

Tube Lines continues to calculate how the climate will impact on its business and is mitigating and adapting for future uncertainty.
