Business Planning

Who Should Apply
Tube Lines is looking for bright, ambitious graduates with business-related degrees or engineers with a business-slant, to join our Business Planning Department.

We’re looking for people with a passion for achievement, who can demonstrate leadership, team commitment, integrity, innovation, drive… people with a restless desire to make things happen and are keen to develop their career in a wide range of challenging projects.

The Company’s Role
Over the next 30 years Tube Lines will be working on maintaining and improving the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. We are looking to develop a new generation of engineers to bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to one of the oldest transport systems in the world.

A transport system which has been serving London for nearly 150 years presents unique and complex challenges for our engineers and support staff to tackle as we strive to make a positive impact on millions of passengers every day.

The Graduate Programme
The graduate programme begins with an induction, which will introduce you to the Tube Lines organisation, our culture, and our vision and values.

We offer two years of structured development consisting of a series of placements, which normally last between three and six months. These are specifically designed to provide exposure to a variety of projects, so that we can offer the best opportunities for your development.

Two examples of projects on which recent graduates have been engaged are:

Asset Management Planning
Asset Management plans are compiled each year for all asset groups, from station systems, to rolling stock and civils infrastructure. They provide the detail on our upgrade, renewal and maintenance plans for the next 9 years and demonstrate how these plans will achieve our contractual and business objectives.

Preparation of Business Cases
It is important that any investment decisions we make are based on sound business rationale and demonstrate that the assets deliver the required function and level of performance in terms of service, in a sustainable manner, at an optimal whole life cost and without compromising health, safety, environmental performance or the organisations reputation.

Business cases require that reports are prepared using all relevant information, so that a decision can be made as to whether a project should be approved.

Two examples undertaken by graduates are:

The upgrade of services at Leicester Square Station, where a systematic review of the problem and the trade off between operational maintenance and capital costs needed to be understood before funding could be secured.

Replacement of Alarm Monitoring Systems on the new section of the Jubilee Line, where it was necessary to understand the legacy systems and alternative technology and suggest innovative solutions.

Career Development
To assist your progress on both the work and academic front, you will be assigned a mentor experienced in the Business Planning discipline. Tube Lines will enthusiastically encourage and support you in your achievement of further professional development.

Regular performance reviews and quarterly reports will monitor your progress and ensure the training is of positive benefit to both you and the business.

There are also opportunities to meet up with other graduates at a formal quarterly forum, where senior managers from across the business make themselves available to answer questions.

What Happens At The End Of The Scheme
Whilst you may already have an idea of the specific area in which you would ultimately like to specialise, the scheme gives you the opportunity to experience different aspects of Business Planning which may affect your decision. During your final six months on the scheme you will consolidate your work experience and professional development. You will discuss with your mentor and agree on the best placement to continue your career with Tube Lines.
