Introduction

What are Advanced Apprenticeships?

The Advanced Modern Apprenticeship is a structured four year scheme that is nationally recognised and includes completing a Level 3 National Vocational Qualification in Engineering. During the first year of the programme each Apprentice is trained at basic hand skills at a SEMTA (Science, Engineering and Marine Training Authority) qualified centre.

During this period you will work in various departments.

  • Electrical – learning installation skills and fault finding techniques at railway and household appliance level
  • Electronic - basic understanding of Ohms law and electronic theory working in line with the National Certificate gained through College
  • Bench Fitting – understanding of basic mechanical techniques and putting them into practice
  • Sheet Metalwork – making a tool box and development in measuring processes, forming and folding of sheet metal

On all these sections you will gain knowledge to advance you through your Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) certificate.

Each Apprentice will have day release at college starting a two year National Certificate. After the first year you will be based in depots, workshops and/or offices around the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. In addition there may be the opportunity to achieve a Higher National Certificate or Foundation Degree.

The strength of our schemes is our commitment to the professional development of our apprentices. As an apprentice, you will have a personal training consultant who you’ll meet on a monthly basis to evaluate performance. They’re also there to help, support and direct you.
